View Full Version : Car radio best for getting Es over local FMs?

I found an interesting situation the other day regarding Es. I noticed that my car radio does a better job of picking up distant Es signals over my locals (at 17-25mi away.) I've attached a clip from 98.7 FM. The country is local WMZQ-Washington, and the urban music is from KKST Oakdale, LA. I happened to have both radios on 98.7 FM, and as the car radio was getting KKST, the Denon radio was getting a clear, non-interrupted signal (with RDS) from WMZQ.

Does anybody know why I'd get KKST on one radio but not the other? They are hooked up the same antenna. I guess the 'capture ratio' (if thats the right term) on the Denon is set pretty high since its meant for indoor reception where it won't be moved around, while the car radio's capture ratio has to be lesser since the radio is meant to be in a moving environment (where signals change strengths rapidly as you drive.)

I also note that in past openings I've noticed my locals being torn up by Es on the car radio that is in my car, while indoors my (presumably better) equipment would only pick up Es on non-local frequencies unless its very strong.
