This is from DXing 93.9 to the north recording with Wavepad from the Denon TU1500RD and 6 element Radio Shack antenna for a couple hours daily.
Sept 25 at 3:02pm:
93.9 WRRR St Mary's, WV 17kw at 689 miles . "93-R" weather . The "ninety" is garbled by another station mixing in.
The morning of Oct 08 I got an almost identical burn on WRRR! What are the chances?
93.9 WAVC Mio, Michigan 50kw at 994 miles on the morning of Oct 6,2005 with some local medical center information. Then again that evening with part of their unique slogan "Big Country 102.9 and 93.9" This one is a regular on Es and proving to be on Ms also.

Sept 30 about 17:00 central. 93.9 KJMK Webb City, MO 48kw 650 miles -
part of call letters and city name in 2 second burst.
Later on luck stuck with me with a full top of the hour id of 93.9 KIAI Mason City, IA at 947 miles / 11pm ... 12 second burn, although not new, this is the best Ms ID I've ever recorded.

My kayaking trip Oct 08 didn't go through so instead I've been recording 93.9 all day.
Here's a couple more catches.
93.9 KOYN Paris, TX 50kw at 566 miles, the burn was just a bit short of the "Coin" part of the slogan "Coin 93-9 Today's Best Country"
And another that may or may not be part of a slogan on 93.9 "The Cat"
any ideas?

This was something I had wondered 'aloud' on the list a year or so ago. Jim Thomas explained to me that if you hang out on the same frequency, aimed more or less in the same direction, you'll usually only get a couple of stations repeatedly. He stated that each receiving location has a geographic pattern and that most of the receptions will follow that. Your direction is ( almost has to be ) more or less North. Similarly, mine needs to be SW-->NW. I have only about 8 stations total via Ms, but most of them ( except the two new ones this summer ) appear repeatedly during almost any major shower.
For whatever reason, though, it takes one of the major shower here for me to get any. All of mine have been across an arc from NC->SC->GA->FL->AL->MS.

I've noticed the same, Russ. Concentrating on 93.9 and listening to thousands of burns I have a mental tally of the types of signals I'm getting and the majority are country music with CHR type a close second and talk/sports 3rd. Urban format is lesser and very little rock or other formats and this fits the pattern well of the 39 stations at 3-100kw in the 400-1300 mile range. (Mexico, Caribbean excluded) 14 have website playlists and or are on stoneage.yes.com and it is amazing how often songs that I can identify match up to what CIDR Windsor, ON at 834 miles and WLWD in Ohio at 739 miles were playing at the time. Often they both come in on the same burn. And I only check playlists once in awhile. I enjoy meteor DXing as it is rather easy and doesnt require as much time as Es and especially tropo. Turn on the recorder and walk away, come back and check the waveform visually. It's kind of like setting crab traps instead of fishing all day :)

This morning Oct 14 I had a 25 second burst on 93.9 with at least one id. I can hear "Country FM 94" which would be WMEV Marion, VA at 533 miles. Near the end of the audio it almost sounds like "Love 93-9" , "Abe 93-9" or something similar. There is a "93.9 Abe FM" in Illinois. Does anyone hear different?

Nice 70 second relog of XHRM Tijuana (Magic 92.5) at 217 AM. 898 miles.
XHRM and KTHQ Eagar AZ are my most logged Ms stations on this frequency.
Note I was pointed 90 degrees away from XHRM last night (they are south of me; I was pointed straight E.

Outstanding Ms burn Dave! That's got to be one of the most solid I've ever heard. almost like Es!
As mentioned on the live logger I got 99.1 WSLQ Roanoke, VA by my first RDS lock, just minutes after saying I had never had a solid RDS hit on a Ms signal :duh:
Here's the 4 second burn that keyed "Q99-FM" on the Denon... and also my Es catch of WSLQ on August 2, 2005 that DID NOT KEY RDS... Incidently WSLQ at 596 miles is still my shortest Es catch. The audio is not as good as it was recorded on microcasette tape in front of the speaker initially.

This morning I also caught a long burn, although not nearly as strong as your 92.5.... about 60 seconds of 99.1 WVOD Manteo, NC 50kw at 736 miles with local info (Kill Devil Hills) and is a new catch.
Also a nice burn on 99.1 WJMM Keene/Lexington, KY only 4.5kw at 532 miles. Full call letters. Also a new catch. Ms was good this morning and am still getting decent burns now after 12 noon.

With tropo conditions the last 4 days or so Orionids meteor signals have been masked. But here's one catch from 1:58am Oct 20

Similar conditions here, Randy. Lots of annoyance Tr and not too much Ms.
Left it on 88.3 last night in case Es came back and was greeted by KNAI Phoenix (SS timeshare with KPHF), some UNID NPR with Morning Edition, and backend Tr from usually weak KBVM Portland OR. KNAI is a relog.

Nice catch, Dave. I tried recording on 107.5 for a couple hours overnight to the north as it seemed to be my clearest frequency at the time. After listening to some of the chunks of audio, 107.5 was pretty much constantly occupied by one of two stations .. WWGF a 6kw at 106 miles in Georgia and KLDE a 100kw in Houston, TX at 520 miles. Only one big Ms burn made it over the clutter and there was no id on it. Perhaps tropo will die down a bit and daytime Ms will be good.

Here's a couple nice Orionids meteor catches from the morning of Oct 22 on auto record.
4:37am 93.9 WLVE Miami, FL 100kw 499 miles , over 20 seconds total, while beaming north, putting Miami in my lowest null :jump:

KSTQ Plainview TX - 1257 miles - Estereo Latino - New
CIRK Edmonton AB - 728 miles - K-Rock - Relog

Well, my post on the e-mail list was a tad early!
I count 3 new loggings last night on 105.5. Ms 163-165, total stations 781.
CHUB Red Deer AB w/RDS. 650 miles.
CBKS Saskatoon SK multiple times between 5AM and 7AM with either CBC news or classical. 863 miles.
KMAV Mayville ND with a nice, long ad for "Frank Johnson Lumber in Mayville". I've attached that clip. 1167 miles.
My experience on 105.5 is a sign to others that just because a frequency is filled with junk, it's still possible to pull out Ms activity. 105.7 is home to sloppy KQAK Bend, 40KW at 12 miles, and 105.5 is full of intermod as well as KEUG Eugene (90 miles) and KCGB Hood River (100 miles). Still, nulling everything as best as possible, and setting the tuner on narrow, I was able to pull these out.

Flash from the MidAtlantic - MS doesn't really exist here so I have no ID's. I've spent way too much time and effort sitting on my few open frequencies only to get either nothing or, when it's 88.3 or 88.7, the same old same old...

Well, I've been asked now several times to add some of my MS IDs and Pings, so here are a few I found digging around my hard drive. I'll get MS here occasionally but it's been sparse lately.
First up is 100.5 KDEZ Jonesboro, AR @ 907 miles, recorded 9-20-04
Second is 100.5 "The Fox", I don't have it labeled but it looks like it was the former Louisville, KY 100.5 WTFX @ 592 miles, recorded 3-10-05
Third is 94.9 CKWM Kentville, NS (Heard on Trop, MS, and ES) @ 645 miles, recorded 12-14-04
Fourth is from 93.7 one night that local WSTW was off... from what I remember nothing was positively ID'd but the Christmas was most likely a station in TN at the time, I forget the calls., Its just an interesting clip due to the number of pings that occurred, Recorded 11-24-04
Fifth is a ping from 11-9-04 with a partial ID on 107.7
Michael-NJ
10-26-2005, 12:10 PM
And yet a few more... All ID'd
First is 92.9 KGRC Hannibal, MO @ 890 miles, recorded 8-10-05 (ID'd via ad)
Second is 92.9 WIKX Charlotte Harbor, FL @ 974 miles, also recorded 8-10-05 (Great Id's!)
Third is 95.7 WDPT in Piqua, OH ID'd via yes... @ 514 miles, recorded 8-13-05, There is a local in Philly 50 miles away on the same freq.
Fourth is 92.9 WSCD Duluth, MN with a long burn with actual ID's @ 1,011 miles.
And finally fifth is what WSCD usually sounds like since it is pretty common...
Michael-NJ
10-26-2005, 12:41 PM
And the last few... there's more but I think 15 new uploads is enough for now.
First is from 100.5, recorded 10-21-04, another partial ID pointed west "WY".
Second is from 104.3, recorded 3-7-05
Third is from 100.5 with several random pings, recorded 9-1-05
Fourth is a ping on 92.9 from 8-10-05 with "lonely" no ID'able material besides the song.
Fifth I guess you could call KSDR which I posed in another thread.
I also have some that are RDS captures only, but that's enough for now.

Well, clearly it's not that Ms isn't happening/doesn't happen in this area.
I'm a lot closer to the locals than Michael is, and I have less antenna, lower.
Oh, and he's often up all night - something I can't do between getting up early for work, and needing at least 6-7 hours of sleep on a regular basis.
But I'm not even sure that all of that rolled together explains why I hear/see so little Ms, even though I have no other ideas...
KW4RZ
10-26-2005, 07:41 PM
Michael, I would say your unid 107.7 from Nov 11, 04 would be WAZA Liberty, MS since there are no other calls that begin with WA on that frequency unless things have changed since then.
Your 100.5 "WY" would likely be WYMG Jacksonville, IL unless 1kw WYGL in Elizabethville, PA. That looks short but I suppose it could be Ms at that range.
I wish there was a way to keep your tuner in mono mode. I'm sure at least one of the others could have been id'ed.
KW4RZ
10-26-2005, 07:52 PM
You can do it Russ, do you have a recording program that lets you see the signals visually after it's all recorded? Let it run all night if you can. Mine (Wavepad) crashes after about 2.25 hours of recording and getting up at 3am to start it is getting old so I'm going to try something with a timer and catch up with the big dogs like Dave :D
Russ-PA
10-26-2005, 08:21 PM
Randy, I have Power Audio Editor 2005 which does exactly that. And I've run overnight recordings and had nothing, even while others were getting Ms.
I wonder if since because of my proximity to most of my locals - about 7 miles, all 'downhill' - I've decided to keep the antenna at only 15', and it's located up under the roof of my attached garage, while that works out fine for tropo and Es, which usually present stronger and longer signals, perhaps the one downside to that may be Ms DX. I can't think of anything else.
I've long since gone over all of this with Jim and Dave via email, and I've tried following Jim's suggestions for directions, dates and times throughout 2005, and I've also tried the 'go for the clearest frequency with the antenna set for the best combination of least QRM and still not aiming at the ocean less than 100 miles away'. Using Jim's suggestions, I usually just get the same 4-5 stations on 88.3 and 88.7 every time. Once I aim other than SW or W, I get nothing, and once I go above 92.9 I also get nothing.

Another relog of WKYS "93.9 Kiss FM" Washington, DC 25kw at 798 miles
several good burns on CIDR Windsor, ON 68kw at 834 miles with song ID's from playlist
2 second burn on WMEV Marion, VA 100kw at 533 miles "Country FM 94"

Not too much going on here tonight (10/27). I'm back on 105.1, looking for CKRY Calgary. I've had KAOC Cavalier ND twice tonight via RDS, but all else is quiet - not even many pings. I'm going to DX 105.1 one more night, then move on if I can't log anything else.
Update: KAOC finally offered up something more than RDS; the attached jingle at 2150 PT.

Oh, and he's often up all night - something I can't do between getting up early for work, and needing at least 6-7 hours of sleep on a regular basis.
lol, well I wouldn't say all night, more as late as I can then I set it to record unattended... There are the exceptions like during the "big" openings, but I'm not the only one then and I pay for it during the day. :p. I really think the main issue there Russ is, besides being so close to Philly... the RF. I know anywhere around a certain radius near the Roxborough towers you might as well forget anything resembling a clear freq which is what ms mostly requires...
Anyway, I tried for a little more MS around here the last few days, nothing to get a positive ID on, but I'm fairly certain what I got. Yesterday (10/28) I set 103.1 to record due south and got a ton of pings from WLOQ Winter park, FL (Smooth Jazz) and WPBZ Indiantown, FL (Modern Rock/Howard Stern). Some of the burns were actually pretty significant. Last night I decided to sit on 93.1 to see what I could get due south (WDTH is off) WHDR Miami, FL was actually in several times during the night in which I actually managed to match to their stream during the night before I went to bed. 93.1 also logged me a new one via trop of all modes, 93.1 in Ettrick, VA (Richmond, VA) was heard with a "93.1 The Wolf" liner. Now for today it's 92.3... So far I've heard WCMQ in Hialeah, FL with Spanish Classical (fighting with WZPR-NC) and a few country pings as well, which I'd guess is Orlando.
I attached a clip I was looking for when I posted that original batch, found it. It's from Moncton, NB with what I think is now CBH-FM2 Mulgrave, NS with classical, the station I logged in trop at the beginning of the month.

10-29-2005, 05:28 PM
Certainly being 6-10 miles from most of the Philadelphia locals, mostly downhill, line-of-sight from the treetops is an issue. The other big factor is that because of overload issues, I've kept my antenna at 15', and up inside the garage roof. As I understand it, not only does Ms like a clear frequency, it also likes antenna height.
The fact that those few Ms hits I do have came mostly during the big June and August events suggests to me that as far as Ms hits here, only the strong survive ;-}

I've had a few whimpy ID's over the past couple days. Nothing spectacular like Dave's stuff. I've been running the recorder more lately. Usually for a few hours in the early am before work and in the evening after work.
Oct 28 at 8:40 pm 99.1 WAWZ Zarephath, NJ "Star 99.1" 28kw at 923 miles
Oct 29 a new pest showed up on my best DXing frequency 93.9. WQSI Union Sprs, AL 13kw about 150 miles north-northeast. They moved over from 94.1 :( I'm not giving up on this one though.
Oct 29 at 10:30pm I got this ID for an AM station on 93.9 and doing a bit of research found this is one of Clear Channel's Somerset, KY stations so this is WSEK Burnside, KY 50kw at 480 miles. Logged for the first time 2 days ago.
Oct 30 at 7:12am 93.9 KSOU Sioux Center, IA 50kw at 1022 miles.. New log on Ms, fairly frequent catch on Es.

Thanks Jim. 80's hits could be any one of a number of stations on 93.9. Especially on the weekend. I rulled out classic rock KZRD or KSPQ as I don't think they would play Bananarama but I may be wrong. It's not CKKL, CIDR, WRSN or WLIT the only logical matches that has an online playlist. It's another one of those mind scrambling signals where both stations mixing are iding and or in between songs at the same time. The slogan sounds like what an AC format station would have. I think you hear as "Star!" might be "Nine" as in 93.9. None on 93.9 has "Star" in their slogan.
with this much research into it, all that is left that fits is WABZ "Abe FM" WCEZ "Easy Rock 93.9", WYEC "Your Easy Choice" all in Illinois, and KJMK "Magic 93.9" in Missouri

Nice ID there, sport. consider yourself lucky as you are getting more ID's with the rocks than anyone else. All I had identifiable out of 3 hours of recording on 93.9 was 7 seconds of The Beatles "Twist and Shout" at 5:43 am that matches time/playlist for KMXR Corpus Christi, TX at 689 miles for the jillionth time. I did get one short burst that had "Altoona" but can't pin that on any station. No 93.9 around Altoona, PA. And had two burns that were just starting the ID sequence and faded too soon. I'll try some more tonight if tropo will stay away. I have to contend with a new distant station at 124 miles north-northeast on 93.9.
Keep 'em coming guys!

CKLM was all luck. In 5.5 hours of recording, there were two pings.
That was one of them!
On second thought, it wasn't ALL luck. I was pointed at them to try to get 'em (and one other station in AB. There are 3, but the third (Peace River?) is too low powered. CKLM is 100KW).
Randy, sorry to hear about your 93.9 problems.... I found out today one of my new "annoyance" translators is moving up the road about 15 miles, to a place that's not line of sight from my house. That will re-open 103.3 for skip, and maybe even Ms. We'll see.

Here's one I pulled out of my overnight recordings this morning (11-01-05)
Its a clip from a local news report - I'm wondering if its Lebanon MO, but then.....
Can anyone figure out the town at the beginning of the clip?
Seems about half of my MS pings on 103.7 are KABZ Little Rock AR 'The Buzz' (Fox Sports). The rest are a mix of the CHR station I keep hearing, a religious station (preaching), a classical station and occasionally some country. Going to stay with this one for awhile. The frequency isn't threatened by a new station (have a semi-local on 103.5) - I just haven't really tried working it for MS. And the Mitsubishi DA-F20 that i'm dxing with now (modified and tweaked by Tim McVey) is awesome for working meteor scatter.

I pulled up the list of stations on 103.7 and researched the higher power transmitters in MO,AR,KY,IA,WI,NM,MT,OR, and some other states and looked over the atlas and I cannot find anything solid to match up to what I hear in this recording. I think the town sounds something like (LaRinger area) & sheriff dept. name (maybe Harrisburg or Harrison) is garbled and sounds like something else. Nice burn though! Maybe someone else can hear different.

Okay, here we go with another 103.7 MS ping.
The Simon & Garfunkel song in progress is KEYN Wichita KS @ 444 miles when in pops this-
"103.7 (female dj's name?), (name of city) number one hit music station"
Help!!!!

Okay, listened to this in WavePad. Seems WavePad plays audio much cleaner than Total Recorder does.
Anyway, I know now that it says "Springfield's number one hit music station", so its WDBR - a new one for the logbook.:D
I sent an email, with the mp3 clip attached, to the PD at WDBR. I'll see if he cares to reply. I still couldn't make out the dj's name and couldn't find it on their website.

I got "Springfield's" out of it first time thru, but didn't get the name either. Playing stuff off the web direct the system defaults to WinAmp so that's what I used - didn't do anything with the comb filter.

Hey fellas... here's a real frustrating twofer I caught this morning. Both are partial ID's just seconds apart from each other on 93.9 at about 2:12am Nov 2. Does anyone recognize the song that starts? It's a popular classic on AC format stations I hear often since I was a kid but I'm not sure of the artist.

Hey Randy,
Your mystery song is Paul Davis's 1977 single "I Go Crazy"....'when I look in your eyes, I go crazy..."
Getting a 'two-fer' and it isn't even Tuesday. Hmmmm..........:)
Russ-PA
11-02-2005, 08:40 PM
Hey Jim - are there any AC songs you don't know ? Seems like you recognize all of them in all of our unID's.
Running overnight unattended RDS software on 92.9 aimed sort of SW - where I could get the best dual null on colinear WDSD-DE and WMGS-PA at about 100 miles each. Got WZGC-GA this way in August on 92.9, so...
KW4RZ
11-02-2005, 08:56 PM
Thanks Jim :)
That narrows it down to the AC stations with 93.9 in their slogan without playlists online. Could be WCEZ Illinois "Easy Rock 93.9", KJMK Missouri "Magic 93.9" , WIGL South Carolina "Mix 93.9" but they are only 2kw and 410 miles and maybe, just maybe it could be KKMK South Dakota "Magic 93.9" at 1304 miles ,,,would be a new record on Ms but I'm afraid there's not enough there :(
That is the best I had out of 8 - 30 minute recordings in the wee hours this morning.
I thought I'd throw this goofed up garbled 93.9 signal I had a month ago or so. This is the most garbled ID I have ever heard. KIAI is the closest call letters to match this signal, but it's so goofed up I think it could be anything.
Russ-PA
11-02-2005, 09:13 PM
The second 'ID' is "something 94" but there are about a dozen possibilities. I can't pin the music firmly to either of the two, and therefore can't associate a format with a partial slogan.

Randy-
KIAI id's as '93.9 KIA', and is country. The dj said "..-IA, Jamie O'Neal..." (probably leading into her recent hit "Somebody's Hero") and Jamie O'Neal is a country artist. I'd say you had KIAI. I've had them a bunch of times on meteor scatter.

Today on auto record on 101.7 I had two ID's. Only one burn in 3 hours was over 3 seconds long and I got lucky with KBKB Ft Madison, IA at 755 miles "101.7 The Bull". A relog
Then picked out this 2 second burst with "Y 101" which is WYOY Jackson, Mississippi. Only 251 miles to the transmitter! I suspect this is an airplane reflection at this range.
I hear WYOY all the time on tropo and recognize the voice guy. They are actually more of a pest on 101.7.

And just now while recording and listening live caught a nice top of the hour burn at 9pm on 101.7 KREJ Medicine Lodge, KS at 832 miles. It sounds like KRUJ to me.

Out of 5 hours of recording Friday (longest ever) I had one continuous burn that was 1 minute 57 seconds long. No ID in it and at least 3 stations with songs. I think this is the longest I've ever had since I started unattended recording in August.
I only had 1 ID out of those 5 hours. At least it's a new log.

I don't hear anything other than "classic rock" either. I had a couple of "almost ID's" like that this morning, Jim. Frustrating.
But the rocks were good to me with 4 ID's in 7 hours of recording on 99.1. It took a long time to review them all with hundreds of 1-10+ second burns from 3-10am.
One burn was over 2 minutes long with a couple stations in it including a very frequent classical station which I assume is KFUO Clayton, MO (only decent power classical listed in range) One of these days I'll get an ID. Although the antenna was north the whole time it seems most of the signals fit the northwest direction including all but one of the 4 ID's. Maybe just coincedence.
03:15 99.1 KJIL Copeland, KS 100kw 934 miles ~ New log

09:18 99.1 I'm pretty sure this is KTLI El Dorado, KS 100kw 784 miles with 35 seconds of Paul Colman "The One Thing" thanks to Yes.com. 22 seconds into into the audio I can weakly hear "KYOO 99.1" so this is another "Two-fer" on a Sunday :)

Awesome Dave! Sounds like Es.. maybe?? There were considerable 50 MHz reports in the west during this time.
I didn't have anything on Ms after 4 hours of recording on 107.5 between 2-6am.
This evening Es came up and seemed to be restricted to TV2,3,4 from Texas, New Mexico and Mexico then 92.3 KOFX and 93.9 KINT El Paso, TX at 1175 miles came burning through the tropo for about 5 minutes.
40 minutes later I got this short burn from 93.9 WSEK Burnside/Somerset, KY with just enough of an ad for Pulaski Funeral Home in Somerset thanks to Google at 480 miles in the null of the antenna while looking west. This is the 3rd time I've ID'ed WSEK on Ms. I guess short range Ms is more common than I previously thought.

Just a few to add from the last couple days...
First was from 95.3 while 50KW WAYV was off the air. "News Talk 1490 WABJ" then a "Q 95 country" matches 95.3 WQTE Adrian, MI, 519 Miles Class A. This one sounded more like trop scatter the way it slowly trailed off.
The second one I'm uploading is more entertainment value. It starts with (From WMGS Wilkes-Barre, PA) "These winter days they last forever" then suddenly Classical from WSCD in Duluth, MN (Northern MN) fades up.

Dozens of good burns including several Spanish stations, one three Mexican's with "Los Cuarenta Principales" which could be either XEX Mexico City at about 1090 miles, XHTD Coatzacoalcos abt 975 miles or XHTR Veracruz about 980 miles. Nice catches fellas. It seems meteors were best from about 3-7am Dec13, again in the evening about 7-10pm and in the morning of Dec 14 from about 4-8am. During these times Ms burns were nearly continuous one after another. Almost sounding like Es at times but highly garbled and no one station lasting more than a few seconds usually. You guys are getting long, solid signals and I had very few like that. Recording in 1 hour sessions some of the files were overwhelmed with signals and I had to listen to most of the entire hour rather than clicking on just the peaks in the waveform. Much of this was disapointing as it turned out for the total number of signals I had the number of ID's to unidentified stuff was very poor compared to any other day. I did get a few new ones and a few relogs though.
Most notable was this nice 10 second 'three-fer' with three 3kw stations IDing on 101.7 at 6:45 central Dec 13. 2 of the stations are Indiana, confirming that state for #40. You'll hear "River Country" which is WIVR Kentland, IN 3kw at 721 miles then "...WI" which is likely WKWI in Virginia 3kw 771 miles, then at the end you hear "6:45 right here on WLDE" which is Ft Wayne, IN 3kw 739 miles.
Also notable is this cool signal which thanks to Jeff and Michael's help turns out to be "Cool 101.7" WCCL Central City, PA 720 watts at 798 miles. Jeff recognized the ID jingle and matched it to an audio recorded by those fellas on a trip through the area which is included here too. This one is a new Ms lowest power record for me. Thanks for the ID help guys!
These two burns have made the Geminids a success. Hopefully there's more to come this evening and tomorrow morning.
I've got several unid's that might be recognizable with someone elses ears I'll post in the un'id section.

You fellas are sure getting some long lasting burns... My longest was maybe 25 seconds. Hundreds and hundreds of 1-10 second rocks.
I had 2 of the longer and clearer burns last night and this morning (Dec15) when activity was minimal.

The last few days have shown that meteor activity has dropped like a rock....
It picked up just a bit last night and pure luck provided this ID early this morning. This short of range might even be aircraft scatter.

My best frequency 101.7 was tough to use today now that WTOT is back on the air. But something unusual was going on all day that I've never observed in this manner. Very unstable and rapid tropo scatter. Not only from WTOT at 76 miles but also WBEI in Alabama at 205 miles and WYOY in Mississippi at 251 miles. All three stations often would come in occasionally, rapidly and fade up and down, often mixing with each other and meteor signals to the point the tropo scatter looked like Es or often Ms signals on the Wavepad waveform. Take a look at the picture I saved from one of the 1 hour audios. Those sharp and ragged peaks are NOT Ms!! It made it tough to go over the 10 hours of recordings. I did manage to pull out one Ms ID. Has anyone else ever noticed this kind of tropo scatter?

Sat on 97.3 last night looking for KBCO Boulder (hi Jim).
Aside from relogs of KSON and CKUA-FM-6, which I won't post again, I did have a "new via Ms" logging of KKJQ with a nice ID. I've attached the file.
Pretty dead overnight, but nice to get this one (Ms #173, Ms KS #8). Of course, I missed all of the fun last week while in CA for a memorial service.
I've also attached an UNID which is pretty garbled, but which I do believe has a slogan ID in it. Anyone get it?

Dave,
Whats'up with that unid?? Sounds like the announcer was talking in 'super slo-mo' :-)
Anyway, I hear something about the 'Tri Cities' in there. Possibly KRGY Aurora-Grand Island-Hastings NE???

Excellent ID on KKJQ Dave!
In the unid I also hear "Tri-Cities" and (maybe best) "variety" then a call-in voice male recording (something) 3 and the start of a funky version of Jingle Bells.
Nothing new this morning for me, no ID's at all from midnight - 7am but while configuring the recorder for another session right at 8am a huge burn came across before the recorder started with "101-7 The Rocket" so KHST Lamar, MO 22kw @ 650 miles. I've had them a couple times before. This was a nice burn though, missed. Arggg! The second recording session from 8:10am-3:09pm resulted in just one ID with KBKB Ft Madison, IA 50kw @ 755 miles. a common catch. Maybe something good tonight...

Parked on 92.9. There are a few Californians, and KMOR-NE, I don't have yet.
Relogged KWMT Tucson via RDS at 432, 501, 737. and 1118. They are still only running 0A's (PS/PI), no PTy even (or RT). PS remains KWMT, PI 4B63.
Many other pings including a station running two contests: a trip to Santa Cruz and a trip to Disney World. My guess would be KFGY Healdsburg CA but their webiste has no indication they are running contests.
Also this "Happy Holidays from BCI Biological, 762 W Broadway" clip (attached). There's a city name that follows. Can anyone pull it out?
Merry Christmas! I'm just goofing off while the kids are napping. Then, back to crazy-time with new toys.

For entertainment purposes. Here's probably the longest meteor burn on any one identifiable station I've ever recorded. On 101.7 about 3:19am. There's actually 2 maybe 3 burns together in this. The first blast as visible on the waveform is just garbled CHR and talk. The second part looks more like troposcatter but is actually 85 seconds of CKNX Wingham, Ontario "FM-102"
69kw at 988 miles. I get this station more than any other on 101.7.
Also had this nice burn of Spanish talk at 8:12am beaming north on 101.7. Habla Español?

My local 101.7, 50KW KLRR, took the night off last night. When I came home from New Year's celebrations at 1AM, they were off, and they didn't get back on until 7AM.
First thing I did was look for Tr, and snagged KMNA Prosser WA (3.5 KW, about 180 miles) "La Maquina Musical". This is really the only realistic Tr target from here.
Next, I left it recording for the night and picked up another new one: KQAZ Springerville AZ (NE AZ, near Show Low/Snowflake). "Majik 101.7".
101.7 is -not- a good frequency for Ms DXing here. Not many targets of any significant power. I do believe I had Eagle CO many times in the night with classic rock, but no IDs, and they aren't on yes.com.
Anyway, I'll take two new loggings on the first of the year.
Postscript (added at 5PM)... another logging, though a relog, 97.3 KLCE Blackfoot ID in this afternoon with RDS PS 2D44.
Happy New Year!

KLFM Great Falls MT with a MontanaHelpWanted.com ad at 0249
CFQC Saskatoon SK with a "Today's Country, Hot 93" slogan at 0404
KRWN Farmington NM with "92.9 and 106..."; I recognize the announcer as I've had this station many, many times on Es and Ms. 0715.
Lots of UNIDs as well.

KAFF Flagstaff AZ with Flagstaff wx at 1929. Relog.

Not particularly exciting, but I will be losing this frequency very soon due to KKNU 93.1 Eugene's move up the dial to 93.3 (accompanied by many other changes in the area).
KDKB Mesa AZ was in with RDS PI 18F1, as well as an ad for a "United Blood Services" blood drive at 59th and Union Hills, Glendale AZ. Relog at 0131.
KTCL Fort Collins CO was in with a look back at their "Channel 93.3 Professional Days" New Years event. Relog at 0715.
I haven't noticed the pickup in activity Jim mentioned in email this morning. Maybe later.

As I expected, tropo prevented any Ms DXing in the AM but after sun came up and cool air pushed it south conditions went back to normal 200-250 mile weak stations so back to 101.7 for the afternoon. No ID's until after 2pm when it really picked up but a few possible's I'll post in the unid section. Between 2-3:10pm I got SEVEN ID's and a couple more possible.. Amazing.
Here's a few.
at 2:02pm 101.7 CKNX Wingham, ON "FM-102" 66kw 988 miles. Nice 23 second burn. As usual.. I knew they'd be back!
at 2:04pm 101.7 XHVIR Ciudad Victoria, TAMPS, Mexico "La Cotorra" 100kw 897 miles....Geez, I was just hearing them for hours on tropo up until midnight last night when I went to bed!
2 Tropo ID's from last night included here for entertainment purposes.
And here's a challenge for you super duper DXers... :D the last file is 59 minutes from 2:10-3:09pm condensed down to 5 minutes by removing the dead air and worthless short pings..
I caught five definite ID's with another that should be easy but I can't figure it out... Who will be the winner? One of them is a semi local to one of you fellas :)
I'll post the time spots and stations that I hear later on.

First for the Quadrantids, and this took a bit of sleuthing.
Attached is what I strongly believe is 91.7 KTGW Fruitland NM, with "Bible Answer Man" from "CRI" with a website mention of "equip.org". Some sleuthing did find a station list where KTGW is the only listed on 91.7 in K-Land carrying this show, and a view of the KPCL (parent station) website shows that KTGW does carry the show from 4-5AM MT. I had this at 0335 PT.
Also just for fun, I attached the CHMX (Regina) CJAY (Calgary) dual-burn from 1/3.

nice burns , guys.
Here's what I ID'ed from the 59 minute file Jan 3 between 2:10 and 3:09pm on 101.7 posted a couple windows back.
time into file: 1:00 several seconds of urban music finishing then "Kiss 101-7" weak = WJKS Canton, NJ 3kw 890 miles. New logging
1:15 "...today, you want 101-7 and 101-3" = WSCP Pulaski, NY 5kw 1080 miles thanks to Michael's recognition and matching to another audio file he had. New logging
1:19 " It's your hayride on WGEL" Greenville, IL 3kw 597 miles - relog
2:09 "KREJ" very weak.. a very common Ms catch KREJ Medicine Lodge, KS 50kw 832 miles
3:44 "country Z 101.7" = KGOZ Gallatin, MO 15kw 764 miles .. new logging
3:51 "new hit country.. hot.." = unid so far
4:58 Spanish "Ocho Cien.." = KXGJ Bay City, TX 100kw 579 miles such a common tropo catch I recognize the distinctive voice guy in their ID that includes "850 AM"

100KW 105.1 CJVR, Melfort SK hit RDS 6 unique times in the past two days while I was in Portland. I've attached a screen capture as well as a short audio clip.
Also noted 7 times in the same time period was relog KAOC Cavalier ND (which really serves southern MB). It even hit tonight while I was reviewing the logs.
I had left it on 105.1 pointed N in the hopes of catching CKRY Calgary. Either they don't run RDS, or I just had some bad luck.

106.9 XHPJ Monterrey, NL, Mexico 25kw 896 miles

Hi,
With KKNU out of the way and KTRO not yet on the air, I pointed N this AM and snagged 100KW CJXX Peace River AB "Big Country 93.1". I'm going to work this frequency hard for the next little while, hoping KTRO doesn't come on any time soon.
There's another station mixed in on the clip advertising drink specials from somewhere; given the direction pointed I'm guessing Sidney MT which would be a relog.

Last night I left it on 93.7, which is now available to me for Ms DXing.
While I was examining the recordings this morning (and finding at most two usable pings per hour). KRAI Craig CO came in at 0745 with "Your Yampa Valley Weather Forecast". Not too many Yampa Valleys out there. This is an Es relog, but new via Ms.
I look forward to DXing 93.7 during meteor showers and also during Es season. Having 100KW KPDQ out of the way (even though it was 100 miles to the NW of me) leaves the frequency wide open to the E, SE, and S.

Hi,
Ms pings were -much- more regular last night - lots of UNIDs plus the following two:
KCLB Coachella CA (Palm Springs DMA) with a spot for an animal welfare volunteering opportunity in Palm Springs. This may be the same station I had later with a Mark and Brian promo, but that could also have been KXXI Gallup NM.
KRAI Craig CO hit again with RDS PI 3CEC, PTy Adult Hits. Two nights ago, I had them with audio and no RDS; this time I had them with RDS and no identifiable audio (just music).

I haven't been recording for Ms much in the last week, but this morning when I fired up the shack I caught 94.7 KTTS Springfield, MO at 592 miles with a 10 second burn "KTTS weather for Branson and the Hollister area..."
Would have made a nice audio ...
Ran Total Recorder for 9 hours after that on 93.9 to the northwest and only caught one ID from WMEV Marion, VA 533 miles. Just barely... 2 seconds with partial call "WME...".
And then a possible ID .... but I see the server is not working so no audio will load up. Maybe later.
Has Es again this evening with TV2-6 out of northern Mexico and maybe 60 seconds of a 91.5 with romantica music.
