I thought I would post some gifs of the current status of my WinTV 2000 application (attached to my WinTV-HVR950). This reflects my trip to SLC and the I-5 corridor from San Diego to Portland on the train. WinTV did an impressively small amount of re-mapping; it only overwrites channels when both the physical and logical channel are the same. I lost some channels due to overwrites (such as XHJK 28 and KMTP-D1 and -D2), but most are still there.

Some comments on items that aren't necessarily obvious:

CW-DT belongs to KSBY San Luis Obispo, The-CW to KION Monterey, and CW-10 to KHSL Chico.

AZTECA belongs to KBWB San Francisco

KRVU-SD is KRVU-LP Redding CA, piggybacking on KCVU Chico's digital signal.

KTSB-SD is KTSB-LP Santa Barbara, piggybacking on KPMR's digital signal.

The three KGO's are SD, HD, and News/Weather.

KABC-WN is "Weather and News".

Create and OC are Oregon Public Broadcasting's 3rd and 4th programs. SOPTVOR is the same as OC; it's the "Oregon Channel". SOPTV is Southern Oregon Public TV; in this case KFTS Klamath Falls.

KTSF-D1 and -D2 were both broadcasting the same SD programming when I saw them. KSTS-D1 and -D2 also were SD versions of the same infomercial. My guess is that the -D1's may be in HD when programming is available.

V-Me is KPBS San Diego, KTEH San Jose, KCAH Watsonville (just changed calls to KQET), and KVIE Sacramento is PBS en espanol. KCET Vm is also V-Me.

KMTP-D1, D2, D3, and D5 were running various ethnic programs or ID slides when I saw them. I assume a -D4 is sometimes present as well.

Rawnews is a KNBC-4 channel with unedited news footage (such as press conferences).

KOIN-DT 6.1 is HD, 6.2 SD

KXLA, KVMD, and KJLA are all broadcast on both digital 51 (KXLA's channel) and 49 (KJLA's channel). KVMD is from Twentynine Palms, CA, and for those of you who know SoCal, that's nowhere near LA :-). LATV is also a subchannel of KJLA; it broadcasts bilingual news and entertainment.

Various "Tubes" were seen - KRCW Portland (32.2), KSWB San Diego (69.2), KTXL Sacramento (40.2).

The "Ion pack" of variations on Ion, IonLife, Qubo, and Worship are on KPXN-30 Los Angeles, KSPX-29 Sacramento, KKPX-65 San Jose, and KPXG-22 Salem.

LA18DT is KSCI San Bernardino (ethnic programming). LA18.5 is KSCI's Armenian Channel ("coming soon" per the ID slide).

KNMT-D1 through D5 are various TBN networks, all in SD.

The Hive is KTVX 4.2 SLC with news/weather/local.

KCSM 43 is all digital (no analog signal, previously on 60, before that on 14 before a swap with KDTV). 43.1 is HD, 43.2 is "KCSMMhz" with a documentary when I had it, and 43.2 is "Jazz-TV" with music and information from KCSM-FM.

KOCE-OC is the Orange County Channel, local programming.

I hope this is somewhat interesting - it was fun for me!

My own local/semi-local DTV observations. I took care to transcribe the PSIP station "names" exactly as the RCA ATSC-11 displayed them, paying attention to spaces, marks and capitalization.
(interesting that Detroit prefers a dash whereas Toledo prefers a space!)

Where you see the abbreviation "HDWA" it means "HD when applicable", i.e., if the program was produced in HD video, or on quality film
telecined to HD, the program will be seen in HD on this channel.

2.1 (58) WJBK-DT Fox // analog (HDWA)
4.1 (45) WDIV-HD NBC // analog (HDWA)
4.2 Weather NBC Weather plus, some local content, but not regularly updated, more weather education than weather forecastng.
7.1 (41) WXYZ-HD ABC // analog (HDWA)
7.2 WXYZ-SD "Doppler 7 Weather", audio is repeating music loop, no voice.
11.1 (17) WTOL DT CBS // analog (HDWA)
13.1 (19) WTVG HD ABC // analog (HDWA)
13.2 WTVG + "13 ABC Plus". Mostly repeats of local newscasts and public affairs programs, also breaks for weather, also carries "View from the Bay", complete with KGO (7) IDs and San Francisco ads!
13.3 WX Now Weather graphics and WTVG promos, has a crawl with words that would only make sense if they were HTML links, ergo I think this is their website, converted for the TV screen.
20.1 (21) WMYD-HD MNTV // analog (HDWA)
20.2 WMYD-SD MNTV // analog, but always SD.
24.1 (49) WNWO HD NBC // analog (HDWA)
24.2 TheTube The Tube Music Network (has local ads), seriously pixelated when NBC is running HD programs.
24.3 WXplus NBC Weather Plus, includes local weather updated daily.
27.1 (56) WBGU-DT PBS // analog, sometimes HD, but sometimes HD programs are presented in SD, especially late-night reruns.
27.2 WBGUKID PBS Kids Go!. 24 hours!
27.3 CREATE Create Network (Home/DIY/Travel) no local content. When 27.1 has an HD program, this channel's video is replaced by a "slide" announcing that the channel is unavailable while an HD program is on the mail channel - "Check it out", the slide says. Sometimes the Create audio still gets through.
27.4 ENCORE No relation to the cable movie channel, this is WBGU Encore, with rebroadcasts of programs produced by WBGU, and Ohio Channel (Ohio's equivalent of C-SPAN) Blacked out with 27.1 is HD same way 27.3 is.
30.1 WGTE-HD PBS HD Channel.
30.2 Family WGTE Family (PBS Kids Go/Sprout daytime, WGTE local production rebroadcasts evenings, Ohio Channel at night).
30.3 Create Create Network // 27.3
(Note that to see the programs broadcast by WGTE, analog 30, you NEED an analog tuner!)
31.1 (33) ION Ion Network (their callsign is actualy WPXD)
31.2 qubo Qubo (24 hour loop E/I chidren's programming) NBC affilates have Qubo on Saturday mornings, but when NBC has qubo, the programming is NOT parallel to 24 hour (Ion) Qubo.
31.3 IONLife Ion Life (Mostly medically-themed programs)
31.4 Worship Worship (24 hour bible verses supered over scenic views and set to soft music)
36.1 WUPW DT Fox // analog (HDWA) (sadly, this station used to have an excellent 24h wx radar on 36.2, but dropped it in 1-07).
40.1 (5) WLMB DT // analog, never HD, Mostly religion but some secular sitcom reruns and Pistons basketball. (This station has been known to PSIP as 5.1 at times).
50.1 (14) WKBD-HD CW // analog. Sometimes HD, but never widescreen. Sometimes lacks a "bug" whilst the analog will have one.
56.1 (43) WTVS-HD Usually PBS HD Channel, always HD, is // analog when the program carried by 56 happens to be presented in HD.
56.2 WTVS-SD PBS // analog. (I've met people who are quite confused that the regular WTVS program is on 56.2, not 56.1)
62.1 (44) WWJ-HD CBS // analog (HDWA)

I Also have observations of DTV stations that frequently come in by Tropo:
(where the call letters are in parentheses, I don't remember exactly how their PSIP reads).

3.1 (2) (WKYC) NBC // analog (presumed to be HDWA)
3.2 (WKYC) always (or almost always) NBC Weather Plus)
4.1 (14) (WCMH) seen NBC // analog, presumed always.
4.2 (WCMH) seen with NBC Weather Plus.
5.1 (15) (WEWS) ABC // analog (HDWA). Never observed any 5.2.
8.1 (31) (WJW) Fox // analog (HDWA). Never observed any 8.2.
8.1 (8) (WLIO) NBC // analog ch35, presumed HDWA, presumed always. Station branded as "NBC Lima", with no channel number)
8.2 (WLIO) Has CW on their subchannel. Note that this station sticks with real channel 8 for their PSIP, and is one of few NBC affiliates without Weather Plus.
19.1 (10) (WOIO) CBS // analog (presumed HDWA).
19.2 (WOIO) Has been seen with weather forecast graphics.
38.1 (39) WADL-DT // analog, never HD, mostly Jewelry TV, informercials and religion.
38.2 WADL-DT Word Network (religion). Sometimes, the "The Word Network" logo appears on both subs, but different programs are running.
43.1 (28) (WUAB) MNTV, presumed always // analog.
43.2 (WUAB) The Tube Music Network.
61.1 (34) (WQHS) Univision // analog, never HD (or would that be AD - Alta Definicion?). Never observed any 61.2.

It would appear that WVPX-23 has no digital at this time, that WVIZ-25 no longer has a digital
transmitter (or, it operates a very limited schedule), and that NONE of the Windsor/Chatham/Sarnia
area stations have digital.

I was visiting a friend in Columbia, Maryland this past weekend and decided to take my WinTV HVR-950 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000J1CCGA?ie=UTF8&tag=pennahighways&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000J1CCGA) to see if I could pick up anything in the signal-saturated Megalopolis. I was able to get the following with the little antenna that Hauppauge provides:

I'm surprised that Sinclair's anchor twinstick does not run SD simulcasts like mine does in the Steel City. WUTB's signal has improved much since the original post, and I was able to pick up some DC stations as well besides just WDCA-20's analog signal. WBFF replaced its TV Land-like "Good TV" channel with ThisTV.

Changes happened soon after my post from Temperance, MI:

WMYD-21 (20) was MNTV ] MNTV (sd) ]]]
is MNTV / WCSN.com ]]] (WCSN is "World Championship Sports Network, specializing in amateur [i.e. "Olympic type"] sports coverage.
I included the ".com" to distinguish it from WCSN-LP in Columbus, which is not releated to WCSN.com)

WNWO-49 (24) was NBC ] The Tube ] WX plus ]]
is NBC ] RTN ] WX plus ]] (Tube dropped for obvious reasons)

WUAB-DT 28 Lorain OH 43.2 STILL has a text graphic noting the end of The Tube.

I noticed that KLTV-DT-10 Tyler TX was still doing that last week. Seems like a cheap, easy way to waste a subchannel to me.

I don't watch TV much, especially over the air. This morning I stumbled onto the fact that my local KSLA-DT-17 also continues to run a message on 12-2 about the end of the Tube. Is this what other former Tube subchannels are doing?

Jim Thomas
01-01-2008, 12:23 AM
Danny,

Yes they are. KWGN 2.1 continues to show a slide on 2.2 of the demise of The Tube channel.

KWGN is the local CW affiliate in Denver. Several weeks ago I dropped an email to the programming/engineering dept. at KWGN telling them that I couldn't understand why they didn't just turn off the stream of 2.2, rather than a 24/7 slide of The Tube now being defunct. The CE wrote back to me that the CW is rolling out a subchannel, due to start in early January. They were hoping it would have been up before Christmas, but I guess that didn't happen. At any rate, they wanted to keep the channel 'active', for that purpose.

Mike-CT

WTXX-20 had the tube on 20-2. Now they just show the same programming as on 20-1. Originally they had a slide that said that new programs were coming to 20-2 but that hasn't happened so far.

Robert Grant
01-05-2008, 01:52 PM
There may be some good reasons to keep a subchannel "active" even when there are no programs on it.
About a year ago, WTOL-DT 17 (11) dropped their 11.2 weather radar (it was of little use, anyway, only showing an echo when and where there was a torrential downpour!), with an NTSC color bar test pattern.
When WTOL-DT did actually drop the 11.2 subchannel, my Sylvania 6427GFF TV would "crash" anytime I channel surfed onto 11.2. The "NOW SCANNING" prompt would show on the CRT, and it stopped me from changing the channel (or, for that matter, even turning off the TV) for about 30 seconds!
Now, if WTOL-DT were to intrduce a new service on 11.2, many viewers would not be able to tune it in - the memory in many tuners would "remember" that channel 17 only carries a single DTV service called 11.1

WSYM 47.2 (38), this is a non-HD channel of the same programming on analog 47 & digital HD 47.1 (38) - it's a waste since there is another source of the same programming, maybe they're not sure what to use this for yet ?

This goes back to the early days of digital TV, before digital-to-digital format converters were common (now, they are mandated, for all ATSC formats, at least in the USA, in CECBs as well as integrated-tuner TV sets).
Without this flexibility, there was concern that not everybody with a digital tuner would have a monitor compliant with all of the ATSC formats. Sending an SD "clone" subchannel made it possible to use a TV set to see a program if a particular viewer's monitor did not support the HD format the station was using.
Former users of an SD clone channel in my area are WXON 21 (20.2, replaced with World Champion Sports Network) and WTOL 17 (11.2, simply deleted).

By the way:

WXYZ-DT 41 now has RTN on subchannel 7.2. It came on sometime between 0600 and 1730 EDT 4-1. Of note it that it is almost never carrying the same program as RTN on WNWO-DT 49 (24.2). Many of the same shows are on both 7.2 and 24.2, but air at different times.

During a recent trop opening, noticed some subchannels on stations that didn't used to have them.

WKBW-DT 38 Buffalo NY:
7.1 WKBW (ABC)
7.2 WNGS
7.3 RTN

WILX-DT 57 Onondaga, MI:
10.1 WILX (NBC)
10.2 WILX 10 Weather. Content is NOT NBC Weather Plus, but rather credits AccuWeather as the source of its forecast. The layout is similar to WTVG-DT 19 (13.3), with a crawl in the center of the screen.
(Log this on 57 while you can, they will be moving to channel 10)

WLAJ-DT 51 Lansing MI:
53.1 "ABC 3" (ABC)
53.2 "CW5" (CW)

These are the channels in the memory of my Sansonic FT-300A, since I used the tuner in my portable DTV rig (with a pair of "rabbit ears") all summer, doing bandscans with the ANT LEVEL mode, which automatically adds channels and never takes them out, during my summer travels.

This was done at or near the following places: Detroit, Temperance, Barryton, Elberta, Manistique, Grand Rapids and Battle Creek, MI; Parma, Richfield and Hilliard, OH; Andry, IN; Joliet, IL; Walcott and Atlantic, IA; Omaha, Lincoln and York, NE.

I was trying to test the limits of the tuner memory, and never did find such a limit. One limiting factor was discovered, however: It will only remember one transmitter (whether it has 6 virtual channels or just 1) on any one actual RF channel. When you tune to another station on the same actual channel as one already in memory, the existing channel gets "booted". I first noticed this in Indiana where WGN-DT on 19 "booted" all three channels of WTVG (WGN itself got "booted" later when I tuned in WXMI).

Several stations got "booted", and I regret not taking better notes.

Some stations "booted", in order of actual channel:

56 WBGU 27-1, 27-2, 27-3 and 27-4 by KWQC
58 WJBK 2-1 and 2-2 by WHBF.

Two interesting notes -
For all the talk about WBBM's channel 3 DTV signal being awful, they had the most robust DTV signal on my portable rig at the I-94 rest area in IN just south of the MI line.
The Walcott, IA reception (morning of 1 Sept) was enhanced by tropo - WGEM at 118 miles with rabbit ears -inside- a first floor motel room.

I tried to post a DTV band scan. I spent an hour typing it all in. When I hit submit it was ALL lost. (insert every swear word you know here ----) I need to cool off before trying to do it all over again. FWIW the antennas are on the new tower and 59 DTVs were logged the first night / early A.M.

The last time I tried to post this it got dumped into the internet twilight zone, never to be seen again. I've had time to sweep up the large pile of swear words surrounding my computer so I'll try again.
