View Full Version : How can I tell what "Generation" my ATSC products are?

I have read that "5th grneration" ATSC receivers are far better with multipath issues than "4th generation" sets, and that the first ATSC products performed very badly in field tests (causing some in the broadcast industry to boldly state that ATSC simply could not work).
A lucky visit to a thrift store netted me one of the first ATSC-equipped products for $ 9.
It seems to work about as well as my RCA ATSC-11 STB and my Sylvania 6247GFF integrated SDTV set.
Anything that improves performance in multipath will undoubtedly improve DX reception, especially with regard to Es.
Does anyone know of a list of DTV products and what "generation" they are in? And what (technologically) makes a receiver "1st, 2nd......or 5th generation" anyway?

The best explanation I can find right now is here

The "generation" refers to the chipset used in the STB. I don't think you or I can tell by looking at the box what version is used. What I've read is that v5.0 is reserved for SDTVs on sale in stores. STBs only go to v4.0. But I recently read that the new STBs available after January 2008 will have version 5.0.
