I know I love to rag on the pitiable junk that is digital compression as opposed to the vastly superior analog broadcast format, it can get tedious I know but this one I just had to pass along, who knows in case we actually do get more ES this summer maybe someone will be able to use that flaw to log my local SRC-3
Already a few years back both english and french CBC (SRC) switched their sat feeds to repeaters outside of Montreal from analog to digital, with a much similar if not nearly identical technology that is so oft-touted as vastly superior.
Ya right.
Aside from angering a lot of people (our taxes pay for the CBC we should be able to see it if we have a dish was the outcry) this technology is just flawed.
If you get a french CBC on 3 that has a promo for the olympics featuring a CGI chinese dragon that freezes up as he leaps at the end of the promo, thats them. They have been running that promo for almost a month now. The only way to see the whole thing is to catch it on the original analog on ch2 from Montreal. Everytime I`ve seen it on the local rptr on 3 this wonderful digital technology cannot handle it and it freezes, only to make a loud popping sound before returning to the next ad already several seconds in. And it`s not even an oddity. On some shows it freezes every few minutes. I used to think their digital box was dying (and on a sidenote, those converters don`t often last very long, I`ve never seen that mentioned anywhere but a lot of these converters will fry fast if they are of poor quality, which of course most of them are, waste a lot of power get very hot and get fried) but it`s doing the same thing on the Tremblant repeater on 11 so it`s inherent to the digital processing.
What is most amusing is that the special effect is a digital one. So there I`m not ragging on ALL digital innovations. Just the lame stupid ones.
