View Full Version : Sony XDR-F1HD AM Performance Problem?

have acquired this Sony unit. While using it on the MW band I have noticed
it emits a terrible RF noise (almost like self oscillation) on 860,870 880,
1460, and 1470 kHz. This renders the frequency unusable for reception. The
noise occurs with or w/o an external antenna attached. It will change slight
after a power cycle, but ultimately comes back to the maximum level of
annoyance.

I tuned my HF rig to 860 kHz with the Sony turned off. Noted the noise floor
and then turned the Sony ON. The noise floor jumped up quite a bit. Then I
will hear the noise on the Sony and the HF rig. Again an antenna on or off
the Sony has no effect.

Has anyone else noted this problem? I am trying to decide to send the radio
back for an exchange, but I don't want one that is worse than this,
don't
want to cut into the savings I get with the rebate if the new one has the
same issue since it will cost to send it back, do want to get rid of it
assuming the issue is a bad ground, etc.

Please comment.

Thanks
John

I have not had this issue, in fact, I've had good luck listening to WCBS 880 during the day in Harrisburg, PA with a tuned loop hooked up to it.
I was not expecting much at all on AM when I ordered this radio, it was always going to be an FM receiver only, however, I've been very pleased with its AM performance. Perhaps you did get a bad radio. Does it display this issue even when you change the brightness settings?

Bill,
Thanks. Tried that, but it did not seem to matter. I moved the radio to the stereo area from radio room. Does not appear to be a problem near the stereo. Some weird interaction going on in radio room. I need to figure it out. Decided to keep the radio and just work through the issue.
