0430 UTC on freq. 570 with my loop pointing to the South from central Ohio I was picking up I believe a Spanish speaking station along with a ticking clock sound and approx. every minute there where three chimes---I listened for close to an hour and could not make out any call sighns or possibly I just could not understand them--it is a definite disadvantage not knowing any forieghn languages when listening to DX...Any ideas what I was listening to?

U bet....if it is the ticking, it is Radio Reloj (Clock Radio) in Santa Clara, Cuba. That 570 gets out.....even if you don't hear talk, the clock ticks give it away.
They stream at www.radioreloj.cu .

Thanks again to cd....I listened to the streaming and it was definetly the correct station....the only difference was that last night they had three chimes on the minute instead of the CW...some folks on another forum said that on Sundays they use the chimes instead of the CW
This is a new 'BEST' for me for MW (1121 air-miles) and I picked it up with my ICOM and Quantum QX loop as well as barefoot with my E-100
Thanks again;

Yes, Reloj is a common presence on 570.

The sounds at the minute are a chime (denoting exact minute), the ID "Radio Reloj" (RAH-dee-oh ray-LOH), then (usually) morse code "RR" (didahdit didahdit).

FWIW, the "RR" makes it very easy to ID Reloj when it's in. Another RR is on 950 kHz, easy to hear the morse under WWJ, even when WWJ is strong and perfectly listenable.

On rare occassions, the "RR morse" is replaced by a three note or four note chime sequence, I don't know why.

I do believe that the chimes are on weekends, but like you, I dunno the occasion or why it changes. News is news!

I also believe....and I'll try to monitor either the 570 or the website....that at 12 midnight (& possibly 12 noon also) local time, that they give the "times of day" in other cities around the world, for 1 minute. Kinda interesting.
