View Full Version : Is there only one Tele Rebelde on channel 4, and if so, where?

at 2000 EDT 7/3, had unusual luck in an Es opening. A channel 4 emerged seconds before the hour with a scenic image (ending what seemed to be a motivational video), quickly followed by an animated Tele Rebelde ID (Cuban network), went to a program about soccer (produced by TVes, complete with a potentially-confusing TVes bug in the upper right), then faded out.

It was only in for a minute - but it was the right minute!

Does anyone know where the Tele Rebelde transmitter on channel 4 is? (I hope there is only one!).

Another question: Do Cuban broadcasters still have call letters, or are DXers simply carrying over the call letters the stations had 50 1/2 years ago?

FWIW...
I looked in an old (1967 printing) "North American Radio-TV Station Guide" by Vane A. Jones and it shows two channel 4's for Cuba...
CMJ Camaguey
CMBF Havana
It doesn't specify a network for either one.
The same info shows up in the 1973 printing of the same book.

Well, Craig outside of Orlando bagged a TR on 4 last year (very short Es) with the "Colorama" music video program.

William Hepburn's www.dxinfocentre.com put up some recent updates on Cuban TV. He has IMO the best Cuban TV info on the Web....I will say though that I've never ever ever seen any call letters on any Cuban TV reception.

As far as location, I'd suppose Hepburn's site would narrow it down. The ch 4 I believe would have to be somewhere on the eastern part of the island, as La Habana's Canal Educativo pretty much has the west covered. The CE is all I ever see on trips. Also, the eastern part would explain Craig's reception.

Re Vane Jones' books----I used to have those as well, as an early teen. It was the only source then of knowing which call letters in the US were available!

In his Cuba listings, I'd say that those calls were pre-Fidel, or maybe 2-3 pears post-, but todo eso estaba/fue historia.

I bought a DVD on www.cubacollectibles.com of old Cuba TV commercials, and the guy told me that there would be a CMQ Television ID at the very beginning. Sure 'nuff it's there, very briefly. Video quality was poor, but then again, it's the only like that there were actual commercials played there. On top of that, some are in color!! He explained to me that (1) Cuba was the 2nd country to get color TV after the US, and (2) some commercials were played in theaters only.

In the mid-60's the only Cuban that I used to get was a Ch 3 that ran the CMQ bull's eye TP (Ch 6, IIRC). I always assumed that it was Holguin (a name made "famous" during the Oct 1962 Missile Crisis as one of the potential launch sites!) Back then White's Radio Log (published piecemeal in Radio-TV Experimenter) was my only source for US/Canada/etc TV station lists.
