Would you like to trade locations??

It's funny. I don't have a scantenna, or anything, so I fed my FM-6 into the Bearcat. The whip did better :-).

Everything straight to the N of me is essentially line of sight, which is why Goldendale at 120 comes in better than Fossil at 75. Salem is closer than Goldendale (about 100 miles) but over the Cascades - maybe I'll catch them on 162.475 when tropo fires up.

162.400 KIH61 Omaha (12 mi)
162.475 WXM20 Lincoln (43)
162.500 KWN41 Shubert (62)
162.525 KZZ52 Hancock (39)
162.550 KZZ50 Essex (37)

Out of these five, it's .525 with the best signal here.
Fortunately they have all proved to be nullable...
here's my total log by channel:

.400 - 11
.425 - 12
.450 - 18
.475 - 11
.500 - 17
.525 - 14
.550 - 18
Total: 101

When I first moved here in 1999 there was just Omaha and Lincoln to contend with. The OAX office expansion in 2002 made it tougher
as I gained 3 more semi-local stations.

162.550 KIH35 Pittsburgh - 33 miles
162.400 WXM33 Johnstown (ironically, located near the cause of the 1889 flood) - 31 miles
162.525 WWF35 Bridgeport, OH - 74 miles
162.425 WXM43 Frostburg, MD - 52 miles
162.475 KWN35 Morgantown, WV - 56 miles

I only get a signal from Pittsburgh's station on my Oregon Scientific WR-8000, which I've had since my stormchasing days. The NWS moved their weather radio page to http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/usframes.html.

Weather radio tower locations in Pennsylvania are shown on all official state highway maps produced by the Commonwealth. The PennDOT map, which is the base for all other versions, can be viewed in PDF format at the Bureau of Planning and Research (http://www.dot.state.pa.us/Internet/Bureaus/pdPlanRes.nsf/infoBPRCartoMapsinPDFandDJVU?OpenForm) page.

I'm going to try to DX the weather band and 2 meters this coming Es and tropo season, so I guess I'll start with a WX bandscan. Taken under completely deadband conditions on Sunday, Feb 28th, with rabbit ears (need to cut a dipole for 162 MHz I guess).

162.400 Clear (very weak signal in the noise occasionally, unreadable)
162.425 WWF84 Lawrenceburg / Lawrence County, TN (~70 miles, 1000w, Fair to Good signal)
162.450 WNG629 Spencer / Van Buren County, TN (~51 miles, 1000w, Poor signal)
162.475 WXK63 Beechgrove / Coffee County, TN (~18 miles, 1000w, Good signal)
162.500 WXN74 Hickman / Smith County, TN (~32 miles, 1000w, Good signal)
162.525 WFG631 LaFayette / Macon County, TN (~50 miles, 1000w, Fair signal)
162.550 KIG79 Nashville, TN (~32 miles, 1000w, Good signal)

This is what I usually can hear, although this is without any external antenna - just using either my Midland weather radio or the weather channels on my Yaesu 2 meter handheld transceiver.

162.400 WXL39 Allentown PA, roughly 35 miles
162.550 WXL40 Harrisburg PA, roughly 100 miles
162.475 KIH28 Philadelphia PA, roughly 8 miles
162.425 WNG704 Coatesville PA, roughly 30 miles
162.450 WXM60 Southard NJ, roughly 60 miles
162.500 WXK97 Sudlersville MD, roughly 80 miles

I really need to try to see what I can do using the APS9...

If I could find my police scanner, I'd be happy to chime in but for the life of me I don't know where it is :D

Edit: Found it..

Here is what my Radioshack PRO-528 can receive from home base.

162.450: WWF-46 - Tooele - 32 Miles west (Weak - Mountains in the way)
162.475: KJY-60 - Coalville (Lewis Peak) - 23 miles east (Weak - Mountains in the way)
162.525: WWF-47 - Vernon Hills (Tooele) - 38 miles west (Weak - Mountains in the way)
162.550: KEC78 - Bacchus - 17 miles west (the most powerful - LOS)

Its nice to see this old thread have some life again! The bandscan here hasn't changed much since 06:

162.400- KHB38 Atlantic City, NJ S-60/9+ [1000w @ 13 miles/WFPG Tower]
162.425- Hibernia County Park, PA//KIH28 S2-3 [73 Miles] *test mode* (This used to bring in Altoona, PA and Mamie, NC on scatter daily until the other week)
162.450- WXM60 Southard, NJ S1-2 [300w @ 49 Miles]
162.475- KIH28 Philadelphia, PA S40/9 [1000w @ 41 Miles]
162.500- WXK97 Sudlersville, MD S5-7 [1000w @ 72 Miles]
162.525- Unid fades, most likely Huntingdon PA or Norwich NY
162.550- WXJ94 Lewes, DE S3-4 [500w @ 57 Miles]
162.550- Fades from Harrisburg, PA and NYC when Lewes fades down.

On a regular scanner with small whip it looks like this right now:

162.400 Atlantic City, NJ
162.425 Hibernia Park (Coatesville, PA) [weak]
162.450 Southard (Howell Twp, NJ) [very weak]
162.475 Philadlephia, PA
162.500 Sudlersville, MD [very weak]
162.525 (empty)
162.550 (Harrisburg/NYC fades)

The quoted text above from 06 was done with my Icom706IIG with a ham vertical. So the results were much better than a scanner.

On an ancient (ca. 1985) Bearcat BC-147XLT scanner I recently bought off E-Bay, with the included whip (a short one at that):

.400 zilch, but I've heard Rhineland, Houghton, and Menomonie here
.425 WNG678, Pine City, MN, 1000 watts, 72 miles, moderate signal if radio is positioned right
.450 zilch, but I've heard Aitkin, Jeffers, and Bogus Lakes sites here
.475 KZZ79, Webster, WI, 1000 watts, 68 miles, good signal, some interference from KZZ41 (Virginia, MN)
.500 zilch, but I've heard Clearwater, Fergus Falls, and Park Falls sites here
.525 zilch, but I've heard Ashland and New Ulm sites here
.550 KIG64, Duluth, MN, 1000 watts, 13 miles, local quality

My FT-50RD, at least when equipped with the telescoping whip I bought for it at RS, works much better, but I can't find it today.

Use ch. 7-13 TV antenna for WX reception. WX is just bellow ch. 7.

It's important to remember that most (all?) NOAA WX transmitters are using vertical polarization. TV antennas here in the US would be horizontally-oriented.

I made a very, very poorly constructed 5 element Yagi specifically for the band (pictures later) and have noticed the expected ~20db[1] cross-polarization loss with both weak and strong stations. On the weakest stations, that means they didn't come in at all unless I held the antenna vertically.

Using the Yagi so far has been a lot of fun.

[1] FT-897D using external LDG analog meter; not calibrated

Might as well post my bandscan with the Yagi here, too:

162.400 KEC83 Baltimore, MD ~40mi S9+60
162.425 Usually clear, faint WZ2527 Fredericksburg, VA sometimes ~50 mi
162.450 WNG736 Washington, DC, local ~2mi
162.475 WXM42 Hagerstown, MD ~60mi S5-S7
162.500 WXK97 Sudlersville, MD ~75mi S9+40
162.525 Weak troposcatter WWG52 Huntingdon, PA ~100mi nothing-S1
162.550 KHB36 Manassas, VA ~30mi S9+60

WZ2527 should be stronger here, but my building is in the way. This is indoors, about 80' AGL.

Scanned with the IC-7000 in the car this morning (vertical 1/4 wave antenna):

Nashville

162.400 KIH45 Bowling Green (Sugar Grove), KY 1000w - 64mi.

162.550 KIG79 Nashville 1000w - local

Pleasant View

162.400 KIH45 Bowling Green (Sugar Grove), KY 1000w - 52mi.
162.425 WWF84 Lawrence Co. (Flanigan Hill) 1000w - 64mi.
162.450 KHA46 Vale 1000w - 70mi.
162.475 KZZ61 Whitesville, KY 300w - 89mi., -or-
162.475 KIH46 Mayfield, KY 1000w - 92mi.
162.500 WWH37 Clarksville 300w - 20mi.
162.525 WNG631 Macon Co. (Pleasant Shade) 1000w - 60mi.
162.550 KIG79 Nashville 1000w - 21mi.

On 162.475 all I got was an identification that the programming originated in Paducah. Both these stations are programmed from Paducah. Several frequencies had interference from other stations.

Although I've had improved results in some cases by using the APS9, I'm probably going to experiment with a 4-el 144 mHz yagi, since that's a closer frequency match than the APS, which is cut at about 98.

Has KWO35 NYC on 162.55 around midnight this morning with a very nice signal on the APS.

I found an old Midland 74105XL and decided to see what I could get with it inside with the built in antenna. Ill have to see what tropo and ES bring (if the MUF ever gets that high)

162.475 WXN68 Watertown, NY 100w ~20mi [Great]
162.400 Kingston, ON ~50mi [Fair]

I wish Environment Canada would list transmitter power and location like NOAA does.
