I'm hoping that this new mobile DTV standard will help people out in fringe areas with DTV reception,of at least the mobile DTV info, as well as our hobby.
The normal DTV stream info ( we now have ) will still be there.

The new mobile DTV standard will be more forgiving ( signal wise ) to allow "mobile DTV" reception . . . will this help us DXers if we DX with one of these new mobile receivers and the station you are trying to pickup is sending "mobile DTV" info in their stream ?
I hope so !!!!!!!!!!

We should see these receivers sometime later this year,I hope there are ways to connect these devices to an external ( outdoor ) type antenna too !
That is my only concern since manufacturers like to do things "cheap" and adding such a connection on a device that suppose to always be mobile may not be in their best interest.

If I understand it correctly a lower bandwidth signal will be able to be decoded further from the transmitter.

If we compare it to a wireless router which also communicates digitally. As you get further from a router, the internet speed will keep getting slower and slower until the device loses its connection to the router. Now if you were streaming a video feed online over wifi and began going further and further away, you wouldnt notice the speed decrease until all of a sudden your video would stop since the bandwidth has become too low. You may still have a weak wifi signal.

Now if you were to try to stream a video with a lower bitrate, in theory it would work from a further distance from the router.

Im assuming something similar to this can be applied to DTV, since the current standard has pretty high bandwidth in order to provide nice picture quality.

I also think we'll see more compression in the video signal in the future, with more efficient formats to send video.

If we had a local broadcaster with Mobile DTV I would give this some serious thought.
