View Full Version : DIY antenna phaser for FM?

Here's the plan. Not wanting to spend $145 on a Bolin antenna phaser, I'm going to attempt to build one myself. I've made my own for MW at a small fraction of the cost charged by MFJ, so why not for FM ? Several web pages have the basics used in the past, and perhaps one of the broadband circuits used in MW can be adapted for FM by changing the toroid material and proper placing of the parts. I don't intend on using it for TV DXing.

Does anyone have any personal experience with a similar project? I'm all ears.

:D

I think I've got the parts on hand for this one:

The toroids I have may not be optimal, but will hopefully work well enough to test it. Will post results.

The one I made only had a marginal effect on TV. I used a toroid from a 300 to 75 ohm transformer, so maybe that is the problem with it. It did have some effect, just not what I thought it would be.
Maybe I need to try it out again.

Here it is all set up and ready to be put into service. I tested the two amps and am not so sure they are working, so I think I'll be replacing them. Also, the phase effect seems to be greatest on ch.5 and 6. Maybe new amps will fix that. Can anybody post a pix of the Bolin phaser? I'm curious as to what it looks like. Are the amps, splitter and attenuator included? Help us out here a bit, please.

Bump

This is the XXth time I've tried to build this ($#(*&^!! and can NEVER get it to work. Sure, I can phase out a station, but it knocks the whole BAND out!

Anyone?

Okay, giving up entirely on the Emslie design, I'm going with the AM BCB WA1ION version here: http://www.chowdanet.com/markc/webpage/RadioWA1ION/passive_bb_phasing.pdf

Eliminating all cores and transformers except the output where I use a standard 300/75 TV/FM transformer, I've got it working 'ok'. PHasing an FM-6 against my big stack, I can null out semi local 104.9 WTKM (35mi) to pick up WXRX Rockford @ 65 miles. Turning the FM-6 is my phasing control, and the box has the balance and level controls.

At least I'm making progress. :o
