With CINF and CINW off the air I have been sitting on 690 and 940 when skywave is good. I haven't had much luck on 690 due to WLW's IBOC buzzsaw. But on 940 I have been hearing a station. I finally took the time to listen for an ID and turns out its WGRP. I heard the phrase "Classic Country 940 and 1470" between songs and made out the call letters of their ID.

Even though 940 is really clear since CINW signed off, I have a hard time believing a 2 watt signal is traveling the almost 300 miles to my stock antenna on my Sony XDR-F1HD. The signal sounded pretty weak, but it would peak at 1 bar of signal and get somewhat clear although still pretty quiet.

Does anybody know if WGRP still runs at only 2 watts at night? Everything on file with the FCC shows they do. This was around midnight, so their 1000kw daytime signal should have been turned off for a while now.

Unfortunately I don't have anything good to record AM with since my tape deck died, computers just add too much noise, so I don't have a recording.

Two watts is possible. I've worked stations on 160 meters running less than that.

However.... AM stations have been known to "forget" to go to night time power level. I've heard stations pull this stunt during local sporting events, such as, High School Football and Basketball games.

Also... they could have been working on the transmitter. This is usually done during late night / early morning hours.
