Do any of the 660 multicasters actually put anything different on those streams? i can hear several of them here from Washington, Baltimore, Richmond, and Norfolk and they all seem to just play the same material as their "main" channel, usually without commercials. Remind me again why people would buy an HD radio?

KXXR-93.7 hard rock has KXXR-2 all comedy; KTLK-100.3 talk has KTLK-2classic country; KTLK-3 ESPN sports radio; and I think classic rock KQRS 92.5 on KQRS-2 sounds like blues; KTCZ-97.1 on KTCZ-2 I think is slightly different, acoustic rock: KTIS-98.5 a religious station may have preaching on 1 channel, contemporary Christian music on another. just a few examples. So around here at least we do get a few extra formats.

But I do keep thinking about Kahn claiming he has a method of transmitting that could add programs without adjacent interference. 73, George S., MN

One good thing with iBiquity is that they tried to get all stations that got on board with HD Radio to select different formats for their multicast offerings so there would be no duplicates. There are Comedy, Blues, Dance, and Smoth Jazz on subchannels here in Pittsburgh which are not offered on any other analog stations.

This is more than I can say for digital TV where I get two weather and traffic channels and two SD simulcasts (soon going on nine months Tube-less  ). At least WQED offers The Neighborhood Channel and soon WPXI will carry RTN.

Nashville:

90.3 WPLN: counterprogramming the analog -- classical music when the analog is talk, talk when the analog is music.
92.1 WQQK: can't tell, analog is a local but HD too weak. No other Cumulus station has subchannels, 92Q is probably not an exception.
97.1 WRQQ: no HD2.
97.9 WSIX: classic country. Essentially the same format as WSM 650 but without knowledgable local announcers, artist interviews, or the Opry.
101.1 WUBT: black gospel. Same format as several AM stations and most of the programming on WFSK 88.1.
102.5 WVNS: no HD2.
105.9 WNRQ: no HD2. Used to run The Vault (light classic rock, largely the same format as WRLT 100.1) on HD2 and simulcast WLAC AM on HD3.
106.7 WNFN: see WQQK.
107.9 WCVQ: no HD2.

WPLN's HD2 is worth listening to. All the rest are formats one can get on existing analog stations.

102.9 WBUZ also has an HD signal but no HD2.

Generally not impressed with Nashville HD radio variety compared to other areas of the country. If memory serves, Nashville was the last city of its market size to have a station begin HD transmitting.
